CALCIUM

The most abundant mineral in the body, calcium is vital for the growth and healthy maintenance of bones and teeth. On average, the human body contains about 1200g of calcium, 99 per cent of which is found in the skeleton and teeth. The remaining 1% is present in body tissues and fluids where it is essential for cell metabolism, muscle contraction, nerve impulse transmission, blood clotting and regulation of heartbeat.

Dietary sources of calcium are milk, cheese and yogurts, tofu, green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds, tinned fish (with bones) and white bread (which is fortified with calcium).

Calcium cannot be absorbed efficiently without vitamin D. Although most people’s vitamin D requirement is met by sun exposure, people who cover up or seldom go outdoors may be putting themselves at increased risk of bone fractures and osteoporosis.
